Quick Fix: Update your bank credentials in QuickBooks, deactivate and reactivate bank feeds, and ensure your QuickBooks Desktop is updated to the latest version.
What Causes Error OL-301?
Error OL-301 is one of the most common bank feed errors in QuickBooks Desktop. It indicates a communication failure between QuickBooks and your bank's online banking server. Common causes:
- Invalid or outdated bank credentials โ Your bank password changed, your account was locked, or your security token expired. QuickBooks sends the old credentials, and the bank rejects them.
- Bank server connectivity issues โ Your bank's OFX server is temporarily unavailable, experiencing high load, or undergoing scheduled maintenance.
- Outdated QuickBooks bank connection data โ Intuit's internal directory has stale connection parameters for your bank, especially common after bank system migrations or mergers.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error OL-301
Solution 1: Update Bank Credentials in QuickBooks
- Log in to your bank's website directly and verify your credentials work.
- Complete any pending security verifications (MFA, terms acceptance, security questions).
- In QuickBooks, go to Banking โ Bank Feeds โ Bank Feeds Center.
- Click Refresh or Sync on the affected account.
- When prompted, enter your current bank username and password.
- If not prompted for credentials, deactivate and reactivate (see Solution 2).
Solution 2: Deactivate and Reactivate Online Services
- Go to Lists โ Chart of Accounts.
- Right-click the affected bank account โ Edit Account.
- Click the Online Settings or Bank Feed Settings tab.
- Click Deactivate All Online Services โ Save & Close.
- Wait 10-15 minutes.
- Right-click the same account โ Edit Account โ Set Up Bank Feeds.
- Search for your bank, enter current credentials, and link the account.
- Download transactions to verify the connection works.
Solution 3: Update QuickBooks and Refresh the Financial Institution Directory
- Go to Help โ Update QuickBooks Desktop.
- Click Update Now โ check Reset Update โ click Get Updates.
- Close and reopen QuickBooks โ install updates when prompted.
- Retry the bank feed connection.
- If the error persists, try creating a test company file and setting up the same bank connection there โ this helps determine if the issue is file-specific.
Still Getting Error OL-301?
- Check the QuickBooks Online Banking Status page for known outages with your bank.
- Contact your bank and confirm OFX/Direct Connect is still supported and active for your account.
- Use Web Connect as a temporary alternative: download transactions in QBO/QFX format from your bank's website and import into QuickBooks.
- Run the QuickBooks Tool Hub for general diagnostic checks.
- Contact Intuit Support at 1-800-446-8848 with your bank name and error code.
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Update QuickBooks credentials immediately after changing your bank password.
- Log in to your bank's website weekly to stay ahead of security prompts.
- Keep QuickBooks updated โ bank connection fixes are released regularly.
- Download bank feeds at least weekly โ long gaps between syncs are more likely to trigger connection resets.
- Set up Web Connect as a backup method so you're never blocked from importing transactions.
