Quick Fix: If your bank feed stopped downloading transactions, start by logging into your bank directly and clearing any pending security prompts. Then go back to QBO and update your bank connection credentials.

Why Did Your Bank Feed Stop Working?

Bank feeds in QuickBooks Online break more often than you'd think. Here are the most common reasons:

  1. Your bank password changed — If you updated your password at the bank but not in QBO, the feed will stop. This is the #1 cause.
  2. Your bank requires an action on their website — Accepting new terms, verifying your identity, completing a security challenge — anything your bank is waiting on blocks third-party access.
  3. Your bank changed something technical — Website redesigns, security upgrades, API changes — all of these can break the connection temporarily until Intuit updates their integration.
  4. Intuit's aggregation service is having an issue — Sometimes the middleman service that pulls your bank data goes down for a specific bank or group of banks.

How to Fix a Broken Bank Feed

Step 1: Log Into Your Bank Directly

  1. Go to your bank's website (not through QBO)
  2. Log in with your username and password
  3. Complete any pop-ups, security challenges, terms acceptance, or identity verification
  4. Navigate to your accounts and make sure everything looks normal
  5. Log out

This single step fixes the problem more than half the time.

Step 2: Update Your Credentials in QBO

  1. Go to Banking (or Transactions → Bank Transactions)
  2. Click the pencil/edit icon on the affected account
  3. Click Edit sign-in info
  4. Enter your current bank username and password
  5. Answer any security questions
  6. Click Update

Step 3: Disconnect and Reconnect

If updating credentials didn't help:

  1. Disconnect the bank account (pencil icon → Disconnect this account on save)
  2. Wait 15-30 minutes
  3. Click Link account and enter your bank credentials from scratch
  4. Map it back to the same QBO account

Your previously downloaded transactions won't be lost.

Step 4: Check for Known Issues

  1. Visit status.quickbooks.intuit.com
  2. Search for your bank name
  3. If there's a known issue, Intuit is working on it — just wait

Step 5: Upload Transactions Manually

While the feed is down, don't let your books fall behind:

  1. Log into your bank and download recent transactions as .CSV, .QFX, or .OFX
  2. In QBO: Banking → Upload transactions
  3. Select the file and map it to the correct account
  4. Categorize transactions as normal

Common Banks with Frequent Feed Issues

Every bank can have issues, but some have more than others. If you're with a smaller community bank or credit union, feed interruptions may be more frequent because Intuit's connection to them gets less maintenance.

Pro tip: If your bank supports direct connect (OFX Direct Connect) instead of web connect, ask Intuit support to switch you — it's typically more reliable.

Still Not Working?

  • Contact your bank — ask if third-party aggregation is enabled and if there are any blocks on your account
  • Contact Intuit Support — they can force-refresh the connection and escalate to their bank feed team
  • Check the QuickBooks Community — search for your bank name to see if others are reporting the same issue

Prevent Bank Feed Breaks

  • Update QBO immediately when you change your bank password
  • Log into your bank directly every 2 weeks to catch pending prompts
  • Keep QBO open and check your bank feed at least weekly — don't let it go months between updates
  • Have a manual upload process ready for when feeds inevitably go down during critical times
