Quick Fix: A bank connection error means QBO can't communicate with your bank. Log into your bank directly first, clear any pending prompts, then update your credentials in QBO.
What Causes Bank Connection Errors?
Bank connection errors in QBO come in many flavors (error 9999, 103, 105, 185, 324, 377, and others), but they all mean the same basic thing: QuickBooks can't talk to your bank. The causes fall into three buckets:
- Something changed at your bank — Password change, new security requirements, website update, scheduled maintenance, or a pending action on your account (terms acceptance, identity verification, etc.).
- Something changed with your credentials in QBO — Stale password, expired session, or security questions that QBO can't answer automatically.
- A technical issue between Intuit and your bank — The aggregation service that connects QBO to banks has a glitch, or your bank made a change Intuit hasn't adapted to yet.
How to Fix a Bank Connection Error
Step 1: Identify the Error Code
- In QBO, go to Banking (or Transactions → Bank Transactions)
- Look for a warning icon or error message on the affected account
- Note the error code — it tells you what's wrong:
- 103 → Wrong credentials
- 105 → Bank website changed
- 185 → Action required at bank
- 324 → Connection timed out
- 377 → Bank temporarily unavailable
- 9999 → General connection failure
Step 2: Log Into Your Bank Directly
Regardless of the error code, this should always be your first step:
- Open your bank's website in a new tab
- Log in normally
- Complete any pending actions (security prompts, terms, verification)
- Confirm your accounts are accessible
- Log out
Step 3: Update Connection in QBO
- In QBO: Banking → pencil icon → Edit sign-in info
- Enter your current bank username and password
- Answer security questions if prompted
- Click Update
Step 4: Disconnect and Reconnect (If Step 3 Failed)
- Disconnect the account (pencil icon → Disconnect this account on save → Save)
- Wait 15-30 minutes
- Click Link account and set up the connection from scratch
- Enter your credentials fresh and map to the correct QBO account
Step 5: Check Intuit's Status Page
- Visit status.quickbooks.intuit.com
- Search for your bank
- If there's a known issue, Intuit is working on it — you may just need to wait
Step 6: Manual Upload as Backup
Don't let a connection error stop your bookkeeping:
- Download transactions from your bank as
.CSV,.QFX, or.OFX - In QBO: Banking → Upload transactions
- Map the file to the correct account and review
When to Contact Support
- Error persists for more than 48 hours after trying all steps → Contact Intuit Support
- Bank says everything is fine on their end → Contact Intuit to reset the connection
- You're locked out of your bank → Contact your bank first to regain access
- New bank or account → Intuit may not support all banks; check their supported bank list
Prevent Bank Connection Errors
- Update QBO the same day you change your bank password
- Log into your bank directly every 2 weeks to clear pending actions
- Don't ignore "action required" messages in the banking tab — they escalate if left alone
- Bookmark the Intuit status page for quick reference
- Have a manual upload process ready — download the files even if you don't need them yet, so you're prepared
