Quick Fix: This error means QuickBooks Online can't connect to your bank — usually a temporary issue on the bank's side or with Intuit's connection service. Wait an hour and try updating your bank feed again.
What Causes Error 9999?
This is one of the most frustrating QBO errors because it's often vague. Here's what's usually going on:
- Your bank changed something on their end — Banks frequently update their security systems, login pages, or data feeds. When they do, the connection between QBO and your bank can break temporarily.
- Your bank login credentials changed — If you recently updated your bank password, turned on two-factor authentication, or your bank required a security action (like accepting new terms), the saved connection is stale.
- Intuit's aggregation service is having issues — QBO uses a third-party service to pull bank data. If that service is down or experiencing problems with your specific bank, you'll see error 9999.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error 9999
Method 1: Wait and Retry
- Wait 1-2 hours — many 9999 errors resolve on their own
- Go to Banking → Update and try again
- If it works, the issue was temporary on the bank/Intuit side
Method 2: Log Into Your Bank First
- Open a new browser tab and log into your bank's website directly
- Complete any security prompts, accept terms, verify your identity — whatever they ask
- Make sure you can see your accounts and transactions normally
- Go back to QBO and try updating your bank feed
This is the #1 fix because banks often have pending security actions that block third-party access.
Method 3: Disconnect and Reconnect the Bank
- In QBO, go to Banking (or Transactions → Bank Transactions)
- Click the pencil icon next to the affected bank account
- Select Edit sign-in info and re-enter your bank username and password
- If that doesn't work, disconnect the account entirely
- Wait 10 minutes, then reconnect by clicking Link account and entering your credentials fresh
Important: Disconnecting won't delete any previously downloaded transactions.
Method 4: Try a Different Browser or Incognito Mode
- Clear your browser cache and cookies
- Or open QBO in an incognito/private window
- Or try a different browser entirely (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
- Update your bank connection from there
Method 5: Use Manual Upload as a Temporary Workaround
While you wait for the connection to fix itself:
- Log into your bank and download recent transactions as a
.CSVor.QBOfile - In QBO, go to Banking → Upload transactions
- Upload the file to keep your books current
- Reconnect the live feed once the error clears
Still Getting Error 9999?
- Check Intuit's status page — status.quickbooks.intuit.com shows known bank connection issues
- Contact your bank — ask if they've changed anything about third-party data access
- Contact Intuit Support — they can reset the connection on their end
- Wait 24-48 hours — some bank connection issues take a day or two to resolve
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Update your bank password in QBO immediately whenever you change it at the bank
- Log into your bank directly at least once a month to clear any pending security actions
- Don't ignore "action required" prompts from your bank — they often block third-party connections
- Keep your browser updated and clear cache periodically
