Quick Fix: This error means QuickBooks tried to connect to your bank but the connection timed out. Your bank's servers may be slow or temporarily down. Wait 30 minutes and try again.
What Causes Error 324?
- Your bank's servers are slow or down โ Bank websites experience downtime for maintenance, especially overnight and on weekends. If QBO tries to connect during this window, it times out.
- Intuit's bank connection service is overloaded โ During peak times (tax season, end of quarter), the service that fetches bank data can slow down enough to cause timeouts.
- Your bank requires additional authentication that's causing a delay โ Some banks have added extra security steps that take longer than QBO's timeout allows, especially with SMS-based two-factor authentication.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error 324
Method 1: Wait and Retry
- Wait 30-60 minutes
- Go to Banking โ Update in QBO
- If your bank was doing maintenance, it should work now
Most error 324 issues resolve on their own within a few hours.
Method 2: Log Into Your Bank First
- Open your bank's website in a browser
- Log in and make sure it's working normally
- If the bank's site is slow, that's your answer โ wait until it's responsive
- If it's working fine, go back to QBO and try updating again
Method 3: Update Your Bank Connection
- In QBO: Banking โ pencil icon โ Edit sign-in info
- Re-enter your bank username and password
- Complete any security prompts
- This forces a fresh connection that may succeed where the stale one timed out
Method 4: Disconnect and Reconnect
- Disconnect the bank account in QBO
- Wait 15 minutes
- Reconnect with fresh credentials
- This creates an entirely new connection session
Method 5: Check for Bank-Specific Issues
- Visit status.quickbooks.intuit.com to check for known issues
- Search the QuickBooks Community for your bank name + "error 324"
- Check your bank's social media or status page for outage reports
Still Getting Error 324?
- Contact your bank โ ask if their servers are experiencing issues or if third-party connections are being throttled
- Contact Intuit Support โ they can check the connection health for your specific bank
- Use manual upload as a workaround โ download transactions from your bank as
.CSVand upload to QBO
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Update your bank feed during business hours โ banks are most reliable during the day, not overnight
- Don't repeatedly click "Update" โ give it time between attempts; rapid retries can make timeouts worse
- Keep your bank credentials current โ stale credentials cause longer authentication delays
- Use a reliable internet connection โ while the timeout is usually on the bank's end, a slow connection on yours doesn't help
