Quick Fix: This error means QuickBooks can't open your company file — usually because the file is damaged or the folder permissions are wrong. Try opening the file from the local drive (not a network or external drive) first.
What Causes Error 6000 77?
This is one of the most common "6000 series" company file errors. It usually comes down to one of these:
- The company file is on an external or network drive — QuickBooks Desktop struggles when your .QBW file lives on a mapped drive, USB stick, or NAS. It needs fast, stable access to the file.
- Folder permissions are blocking access — Windows permissions on the folder containing your company file may be preventing QuickBooks from reading or writing to it.
- The company file or transaction log is damaged — If your .QBW or .TLG file got corrupted (power outage, forced shutdown, etc.), you'll see this error on open.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6000 77
Method 1: Copy the File to Your Local C: Drive
- Navigate to the folder where your company file lives
- Copy the
.QBWfile to your local desktop orC:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files - Open QuickBooks and use File → Open or Restore Company → Open a company file
- Browse to the new local copy and open it
If this works, the issue is your original location — not the file itself.
Method 2: Rename the .TLG and .ND Files
- Close QuickBooks completely
- Go to the folder where your company file is stored
- Find the files with the same name as your company file but ending in
.TLGand.ND - Rename them (add
.oldto the end — e.g.,MyCompany.qbw.tlg.old) - Open QuickBooks and try opening the company file again
QuickBooks will recreate these files automatically.
Method 3: Run the QuickBooks File Doctor
- Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit
- Open Tool Hub and select Company File Issues
- Click Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Select your company file and let it scan and repair
This can take 10-20 minutes depending on your file size.
Method 4: Update Folder Permissions
- Right-click the folder containing your company file
- Select Properties → Security → Edit
- Make sure your Windows user and
QBDataServiceUserXXhave Full Control - Click Apply and try again
