Quick Fix: This error means QuickBooks can't access your company file — usually because another instance has it locked, or hosting mode is misconfigured. Try restarting your computer and opening the file again.
What Causes Error 6000 83?
- Hosting mode is turned on at the wrong workstation — In multi-user setups, only the server computer should have hosting mode enabled. If a workstation also has it on, the file gets confused about who owns it.
- The company file is being accessed by another process — Antivirus software, backup programs, or another QuickBooks instance may have a lock on the file.
- Damaged .ND (network descriptor) file — The .ND file helps QuickBooks locate the company file on a network. If it's corrupted, you'll get this error.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6000 83
Method 1: Restart and Try Again
- Close QuickBooks on all computers
- Restart the server computer (the one hosting the file)
- Open QuickBooks on the server first, then on workstations
Sometimes it really is this simple.
Method 2: Check Hosting Mode
- On each workstation: open QuickBooks → File → Utilities
- If you see "Stop Hosting Multi-User Access," click it — that workstation was incorrectly hosting
- On the server: make sure it says "Host Multi-User Access" under File → Utilities
Only one machine should host. Everything else connects.
Method 3: Rename .ND and .TLG Files
- Close QuickBooks on all machines
- Navigate to your company file folder
- Find the
.NDand.TLGfiles matching your company file name - Rename them by adding
.oldto the end - Open QuickBooks Database Server Manager and scan the folder
- Try opening the file again
Method 4: Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub
- Open it and go to Company File Issues
- Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Select your company file, choose "Check your file and network"
- Let it complete the scan and repair
Method 5: Move the File Locally
If you're opening the file over a network:
- Copy the
.QBWfile to the local C: drive - Open it directly from the local path
- If it opens, the issue is network-related — check your network configuration
