Quick Fix: This error means QuickBooks can't create, open, or restore a company file — usually because the file is damaged or the destination folder has an issue. Try restoring your backup to a fresh folder on your C: drive.
What Causes Error 6150?
- The company file (.QBW) is damaged — Power outages, network interruptions, or forced shutdowns while QuickBooks was writing data can corrupt the file. Error 6150 often shows up alongside error code -1006.
- The backup file (.QBB) is incomplete — If you're restoring from a backup that was interrupted during creation, the restore will fail with this error.
- Another program is interfering — Antivirus real-time scanning, cloud sync services (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive), or another QuickBooks process can lock the file.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6150
Method 1: Restore to a New Local Folder
- Create a new folder:
C:\QBRestore - Open QuickBooks → File → Open or Restore Company → Restore a backup copy
- Choose your
.QBBfile and restore it to the new folder - If it works, use this as your new company file location
Method 2: Rename Supporting Files
- Close QuickBooks completely
- Go to the folder where your company file lives
- Rename the
.TLGand.NDfiles by adding.oldto the extension - Try opening the company file again — QuickBooks will rebuild these files
Method 3: Disable Antivirus and Cloud Sync
- Temporarily disable your antivirus real-time scanning
- Pause any cloud sync services (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive)
- Try opening or restoring the file
- If it works, add QuickBooks folders to your antivirus exclusion list permanently
Method 4: Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Download QuickBooks Tool Hub
- Open it → Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Select your company file and run the diagnostic
- Follow any repair recommendations
Method 5: Use a Previous Backup
If your most recent backup is corrupted:
- Check for older backup files (sort by date)
- Try restoring the second-most-recent backup
- Also check the
ADR(Auto Data Recovery) folder in your company file directory — QuickBooks saves an automatic backup there
Still Getting Error 6150?
- Contact Intuit Data Recovery — they offer paid recovery services for severely damaged files
- Hire a QuickBooks ProAdvisor — especially one who specializes in file repair
- Consider starting fresh — if the file is unrecoverable and you don't have a good backup, rebuilding from bank statements may be faster than endless troubleshooting
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Set up automatic scheduled backups — File → Back Up Company → Set Up Scheduled Backup
- Never store company files in cloud-synced folders — Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive cause corruption
- Use a UPS (battery backup) if power outages are common in your area
- Close QuickBooks properly — always exit the program before shutting down
