Quick Fix: This error means QuickBooks can't restore or open a backup file — usually because the backup is incomplete, the file path is too long, or the target folder doesn't have the right permissions. Try restoring to a different folder on your local C: drive.
What Causes Error 6147?
- The backup file (.QBB) is incomplete or corrupted — If the backup was interrupted (computer shut down, ran out of disk space), the file can't be restored properly.
- The restore path is too long or on an external/network drive — QuickBooks has trouble restoring files when the destination path exceeds ~210 characters or points to a USB drive, NAS, or cloud-synced folder.
- Folder permissions are preventing the restore — QuickBooks needs full read/write access to create the new company file during restoration.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6147
Method 1: Restore to a Simple Local Path
- Create a new folder like
C:\QBRestore - Open QuickBooks → File → Open or Restore Company → Restore a backup copy
- Select your
.QBBbackup file - Choose
C:\QBRestoreas the destination - Try the restore again
This eliminates long paths and network drive issues in one step.
Method 2: Check the Backup File
- Verify the
.QBBfile size is reasonable (not 0 KB or suspiciously small) - If you have multiple backups, try an older one
- If the backup is on a USB drive, copy it to your local drive first, then restore
Method 3: Fix Folder Permissions
- Right-click the destination folder → Properties → Security
- Make sure your user account and
QBDataServiceUserXXhave Full Control - Click Apply, then retry the restore
Method 4: Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Open QuickBooks Tool Hub
- Go to Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Point it at your company file location
- Let it scan and repair any issues
Method 5: Use Auto Data Recovery
If you can't restore from backup and your original file is also damaged:
- Navigate to your company file folder
- Look for an
ADRfolder (Auto Data Recovery) — QuickBooks creates this automatically - Inside, you'll find
.QBW.adrand.TLG.adrfiles - Copy them to a new folder, remove the
.adrextension - Try opening the restored file
This is a last-resort recovery method, but it works surprisingly often.
Still Getting Error 6147?
- Try restoring on a different computer — this rules out machine-specific issues
- Contact Intuit Support — they have file recovery tools beyond what's publicly available
- Hire a QuickBooks ProAdvisor who specializes in data recovery
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Verify your backups regularly — restore a backup to a test folder once a month to confirm it actually works
- Store backups on a local drive — not USB sticks or cloud-synced folders
- Don't interrupt the backup process — let it finish completely before shutting down
- Keep your company file path short and simple
