Quick Fix: This error means your company file is out of sync with the transaction log — usually after someone opened it on a different computer or the file wasn't closed properly. Open the file on the computer that last had it open successfully.
What Causes Error 6190?
- Transaction log (.TLG) is out of sync with the company file (.QBW) — QuickBooks tracks changes in a transaction log. If the .QBW and .TLG files get out of sync (common when the file is accessed from multiple machines), this error appears.
- The file was opened in single-user mode on a different workstation — If User A opened the file in single-user mode and made changes, then User B tries to open it, the version mismatch triggers 6190.
- A crash or forced shutdown interrupted a save — The company file saved but the transaction log didn't (or vice versa), creating a mismatch.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6190
Method 1: Open on the Last Computer That Used the File
- Figure out which computer last had the file open (check with your team)
- Open QuickBooks on that specific computer
- Once it opens, go to File → Back Up Company → Create Local Backup
- Close QuickBooks
- Now other users can open it normally
This resyncs the transaction log with the company file.
Method 2: Rename the .TLG File
- Close QuickBooks on all computers
- Navigate to your company file folder
- Find the
.TLGfile with the same name as your company file - Rename it to
.TLG.old - Open QuickBooks — it will create a fresh transaction log
You won't lose any data. The .TLG is a log, not your actual books.
Method 3: Restore from the Most Recent Backup
- Open QuickBooks → File → Open or Restore Company → Restore a backup copy
- Select your most recent
.QBBfile - Restore it to a new folder
- Verify the data looks correct, then use this as your working file
Method 4: Use Auto Data Recovery
If you don't have a recent backup:
- Go to your company file folder and look for an
ADRsubfolder - Copy the
.QBW.adrfile to a new folder - Remove the
.adrextension - Try opening it in QuickBooks
Method 5: Run QuickBooks File Doctor
- Open QuickBooks Tool Hub
- Go to Company File Issues → QuickBooks File Doctor
- Select your file and let it repair
Still Getting Error 6190?
- Contact Intuit Support — especially if you've lost data and need recovery help
- Hire a ProAdvisor who can audit your multi-user setup and prevent this from recurring
- Consider QuickBooks Online if multi-user Desktop keeps causing file sync problems — QBO handles multi-user access natively
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Always close QuickBooks properly before shutting down — no force-closing or pulling the plug
- Use multi-user mode consistently — never open in single-user mode on a workstation
- Back up daily — automated scheduled backups are your safety net
- Run Verify Data regularly — File → Utilities → Verify Data catches problems before they become errors
