How to Fix QuickBooks Error 15271
Method 1: Restart and Update as Administrator
- Restart your computer (clears file locks)
- Right-click the QuickBooks icon → Run as Administrator
- Go to Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop
- Click Update Now → check Reset Update → click Get Updates
- Once downloaded, close and reopen QuickBooks to apply
Method 2: Rename the Update Folder
- Close QuickBooks completely
- Go to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks [year]\Components - Find the folder starting with
downloadqband rename it todownloadqb_old - Open QuickBooks as administrator and run the update — it will create a fresh download
Method 3: End Background Processes
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager - End any processes named:
- QBW32.exe
- QBUpdate.exe
- QBDBMgrN.exe
- QBCFMonitorService.exe
- Try the update again
Method 4: Repair QuickBooks Installation
- Go to Control Panel → Programs → QuickBooks
- Click Change/Repair (not Uninstall)
- Follow the prompts to repair the installation
- Restart your computer
- Run the update again
Method 5: Clean Install
If nothing else works:
- Uninstall QuickBooks from Control Panel
- Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub
- Run Clean Install Tool under Installation Issues
