Quick Fix: This error means QuickBooks couldn't finish downloading or installing an update — usually because it doesn't have permission to write to the installation folder. Run QuickBooks as administrator and try the update again.

What Causes Error 15106?

  1. Insufficient file permissions — QuickBooks needs write access to its installation directory to apply updates. If your Windows user account doesn't have admin rights, or if folder permissions have been tightened, updates fail.
  2. Another program is using QuickBooks files — Antivirus real-time scanning can lock update files mid-download, preventing QuickBooks from writing them.
  3. Digital signature certificate is outdated — QuickBooks verifies updates using a digital certificate. If it's expired or not installed, the update can't be validated and applied.

How to Fix QuickBooks Error 15106

Method 1: Run QuickBooks as Administrator

  1. Close QuickBooks
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon
  3. Select Run as Administrator
  4. Go to Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop
  5. Click Update Now → Get Updates

Method 2: Rename the Download Folder

If a partial download is stuck:

  1. Close QuickBooks
  2. Navigate to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks [year]\Components\Downloadqb[version]
  3. Rename the folder by adding .old at the end
  4. Open QuickBooks as administrator
  5. Try the update again — QuickBooks will create a fresh download folder

Method 3: Add a Security Certificate

  1. Close QuickBooks
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks [year]
  3. Right-click QBW32.exeProperties → Digital Signatures
  4. Select the signature in the list → click Details → View Certificate → Install Certificate
  5. Choose Local Machine and let Windows place it automatically
  6. Restart QuickBooks and try updating

Method 4: Temporarily Disable Antivirus

  1. Disable real-time scanning in your antivirus
  2. Run QuickBooks as administrator
  3. Run the update
  4. Re-enable antivirus once the update completes

Method 5: Use QuickBooks Tool Hub

  1. Download QuickBooks Tool Hub
  2. Go to Program Problems → Quick Fix My Program
  3. After it finishes, try updating again

Still Getting Error 15106?

  • Make sure you're logged into Windows as an administrator — restricted user accounts can't update QuickBooks
  • Contact your IT admin if you're on a managed network with restricted permissions
  • Contact Intuit Support for help with stubborn update failures

Prevent This Error in the Future

  • Always run QuickBooks as administrator — or set it to always run as admin: right-click → Properties → Compatibility → "Run this program as an administrator"
  • Schedule updates during off-hours so antivirus and other programs are less likely to interfere
  • Keep Windows and QuickBooks on the same update schedule — don't let either fall behind
  • Exclude QuickBooks folders from antivirus real-time scanning
