Go to Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update. If that fails, delete the CPS folder contents and re-download.
Quick Fix: Go to Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update. If that fails, delete the CPS folder contents and re-download.
What Causes Error PS033?
Error PS033 appears when QuickBooks detects that your payroll tax tables are outdated or corrupted and can't process payroll until they're refreshed. Common causes:
- Tax table update wasn't applied — You downloaded an update but it didn't install correctly, or QuickBooks was closed before the update could be applied to your company file.
- Damaged payroll tax table files — The local CPS (tax table) files became corrupted due to a power failure, disk error, or interrupted download.
- Payroll subscription not recognized — QuickBooks can't verify your active payroll subscription, so it treats your tax tables as expired even if they were recently updated.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error PS033
Solution 1: Download the Complete Payroll Update
- Open QuickBooks Desktop.
- Go to Employees → Get Payroll Updates.
- Check the Download Entire Update checkbox.
- Click Update and wait for the download to complete (don't close QuickBooks).
- When you see "A payroll update is available," close and reopen QuickBooks.
- Try running payroll again.
Solution 2: Clear and Re-download Tax Table Files
- Close QuickBooks Desktop completely.
- Navigate to the QuickBooks payroll folder:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks [year]\Components\Payroll\CPS
- Select all files in the CPS folder and delete them (or move them to a backup folder).
- Also check and clear:
- C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooks [year]\Components\Payroll\CPS
- Open QuickBooks as Administrator (right-click → Run as administrator).
- Go to Employees → Get Payroll Updates → check Download Entire Update → click Update.
- Restart QuickBooks after the download completes.
Solution 3: Re-validate Your Payroll Service Key
- In QuickBooks, go to Employees → My Payroll Service → Manage Service Key.
- Note your current service key, then click Remove.
- Click Add and re-enter your payroll service key.
- Click Next → Finish.
- Go to Employees → Get Payroll Updates → Download Entire Update → Update.
- If you don't have your service key, log in to your Intuit account at https://accounts.intuit.com to retrieve it.
Still Getting Error PS033?
- Run the QuickBooks Tool Hub → Payroll Issues for automated diagnostics.
- Verify your QuickBooks Desktop is fully updated: Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop → Update Now.
- If you recently restored a company file backup, payroll subscriptions may need reactivation — contact Intuit at 1-800-446-8848.
- Try opening the company file on a different computer with QuickBooks installed to rule out machine-specific issues.
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Always let payroll updates finish — don't close QuickBooks or shut down during a download.
- Update payroll at the start of each pay period — don't wait until you're about to run payroll.
- Keep your payroll subscription active — lapses can cause tax table recognition issues even after reactivation.
- Run Verify Data periodically (File → Utilities → Verify Data) to catch file corruption early.
- Back up your company file before each payroll update — so you can recover quickly if an update fails.
