Quick Fix: Restart the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the host machine, delete the .ND file next to your company file, and reopen QuickBooks.
What Causes Error 6129?
Error 6129 (often shown as "Error -6129, 0") occurs when QuickBooks Desktop can't verify the database connection to your company file. This is a multi-user mode error that happens when the Database Server Manager can't communicate properly with the company file. Common causes:
- QuickBooks Database Server Manager not running โ The service (
QBDBMgrN) on the host/server computer is stopped or crashed, and workstations can't establish a database connection. - Corrupted Network Data (.ND) file โ The
.NDfile that QuickBooks uses to track the database connection is damaged or contains stale information from a previous session. - Firewall blocking database communication โ Your firewall is blocking the ports that QuickBooks Database Server Manager uses to communicate between the server and workstations (TCP ports 8019, 56728, 55378-55382).

Solution 1: Restart Database Server Manager and Delete .ND File
- On the host/server computer (where the company file is stored):
- Close QuickBooks on all workstations AND the server.
- Navigate to the company file folder.

- Switch to the Database Server tab โ verify the status shows running.
- If it shows stopped, click Start (or go to Windows Services and start it).
- Go to the Port Monitor tab โ note the firewall port listed and ensure it's open.
Solution 3: Configure Firewall for QuickBooks Multi-User
- Open Windows Defender Firewall โ Advanced Settings.
- Click Inbound Rules โ New Rule.

- C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks [year]\QBW32.exe
- Restart QuickBooks Database Server Manager and test the connection.
Still Getting Error 6129?
- Verify all computers are running the same version and build of QuickBooks โ mismatched versions can't connect.
- Try accessing the file using the full UNC path:
\\ServerName\ShareName\CompanyFile.QBWinstead of a mapped drive letter. - Check that the hosting computer's Windows Sharing settings allow file access from other computers on the network.
- Use the QuickBooks Tool Hub โ Network Issues โ QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
- Contact Intuit Support at 1-800-446-8848 for multi-user network configuration help.
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Set QuickBooks Database Server Manager to start automatically โ verify in Windows Services that the startup type is "Automatic."
- Don't store company files on mapped drives โ use UNC paths for better reliability.
- Keep all QuickBooks installations updated to the same version simultaneously.
- Monitor the host computer โ if it goes to sleep or restarts unexpectedly, all workstations lose their connection.
- Document your firewall rules so they aren't accidentally removed during security updates.
