Quick Fix: This error means your workstation can't switch to multi-user mode because it can't find the server hosting the company file. Make sure the server computer is on, QuickBooks Database Server Manager is running, and both machines are on the same network.
What Causes Error H101?
- Hosting isn't configured on the server โ The computer that stores the company file needs to have hosting mode turned on and QuickBooks Database Server Manager running. If it's not set up, workstations can't find the file.
- Firewall is blocking QuickBooks communication โ Firewalls on either the server or workstation can block the ports QuickBooks uses for multi-user access.
- DNS or network configuration issue โ The workstation needs to resolve the server's network name. If DNS is misconfigured, or the server is on a different subnet, the connection fails.
How to Fix QuickBooks Error H101
Method 1: Verify Hosting Mode on the Server
- On the server (the computer with the company file): open QuickBooks
- Go to File โ Utilities
- You should see "Stop Hosting Multi-User Access" โ this means hosting is ON (which is correct)
- If you see "Host Multi-User Access," click it to turn hosting ON
- On each workstation: File โ Utilities should show "Host Multi-User Access" (meaning hosting is OFF โ correct for workstations)
Method 2: Restart QuickBooks Database Server Manager
- On the server: press
Windows + R, typeservices.msc - Find QuickBooksDBXX (XX = your version number)
- Right-click โ Restart
- Open QuickBooks Database Server Manager from the Start menu
- Click Scan Folders and add the folder containing your company file
- Click Scan to register the file
Method 3: Configure Firewall Exceptions
- On both server and workstations, open Windows Firewall
- Add exceptions for:
- QBW32.exe (QuickBooks application)
- QBDBMgrN.exe (Database Server Manager)
- Port 8019 (and the dynamic port assigned to your QB version)
- Allow both inbound and outbound connections
Method 4: Ping the Server
- On the workstation: open Command Prompt
- Type
ping [server-computer-name]and press Enter - If it fails, the machines can't see each other on the network
- Try using the server's IP address instead of its name
- Check that both machines are connected to the same network/subnet
Method 5: Run QuickBooks File Doctor in Network Mode
- Download QuickBooks Tool Hub
- Open it โ Company File Issues โ QuickBooks File Doctor
- Select your company file
- Choose "Check your file and network"
- Let it diagnose and fix connectivity issues
Still Getting Error H101?
- Contact your IT administrator โ multi-user networking issues often require network-level troubleshooting
- Contact Intuit Support โ they can remote in and verify your multi-user configuration
- Consider QuickBooks Online if multi-user Desktop networking is a constant struggle โ QBO handles concurrent access without any network setup
Prevent This Error in the Future
- Document your multi-user setup โ which machine is the server, what ports are open, what hosting settings are configured
- Use static IP addresses for the server to avoid DNS resolution issues
- Restart Database Server Manager after QB updates โ updates can reset the service
- Test multi-user access after any network changes (new router, firewall updates, etc.)
